As we pull up to Sure-Lock Self Storage, the storm rages, rain pelting against the windshield. Stuffed into the tiny back seat of Tobias’s sports car with Kellen, my skin vibrates with the low-level electricity he emits, and every hair on my body stands on end. It’s an active struggle not to absorb all the excess energy, but I don’t want to skim even a drop if it will damage Kellen’s link to the storm.

Emil parks next to a sleek, red, muscle car and turns off the ignition.

The others arrived ahead of us as we dropped Tally off at the back before driving around to the front.

Through the heavy rain, the sign for the storage facility casts a white pool of light over the minimal parking area, but the office at the gate lays dark, already closed for the night. The post in front of the gate holds a password protected lock to provide after-hours access to renters. A security camera mounted on the side of the office hints at security that doesn’t exist. According to Julian, the owner stopped paying the security company, and the cameras are all for show. I don’t know how he discovered this, but it makes our lives easier. We won’t need to worry about our secrets being exposed to the public.

Perhaps that’s why the Hunters chose this location over the nicer places located farther into town. It makes it easy to set up shop in a place where no one will check on what’s going on in the storage units after dark.

When we climb out of our car, the rain instantly plasters my clothes to my body. I eye Julian, who fares better in his ridiculous black duster.

Domnall slicks back his wet hair. “How about we shut off the waterworks? If the spells aren’t eradicated by now, more rain won’t make a difference.”

“One does not simply shut off a storm,” Kellen growls through clenched teeth as he strips out of his sodden dress shirt. “I released her an hour ago, but she’s decided to stay.”

“She’s wooing you, mate.” Domnall claps him on the shoulder with a wide grin. “After this is over, you can have a spot of fun.”

“No fun.” I strip off my hoodie. The low cut tank top I wear beneath offers plenty of room for my wings to slip free from their hiding place. “We get this done, then head home.”

“You’re a real sour puss for a succubus.” Domnall grabs Julian by the back of the neck and gives him a hard shake. “What are they teaching the young ones these days?”

“You’d have to ask her mentor.” Julian shrugs out of his grip on the pretext of checking the knives strapped on either side of his body, under his arms. The hilt of a sword peeks out at his hip, and I wonder if it’s the Hunter’s blade he took from me at the bakery. “I had no say in raising her.”

I brush the comments off. What Domnall thinks of me means nothing.
